Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

Our students at Greely take on a number of leadership roles in the school, including acting as lunch monitors, door monitors, and assistants, and/or “reading buddies”, for younger students, and fundraising for Terry Fox Run, the M.S. Readathon, Food Bank, and other causes. Last year we celebrated 31 years of Jump Rope for Heart. Students show enthusiasm by making posters that are proudly submitted for display as part of our fundraising or Community of Character activities. During extra-curricular activities, students assist with organizing and refereeing. A three-day MacSkimming trip for our grade sixes is an annual event to develop leadership and team-building skills. Leadership is widely celebrated through extra-curricular sports and clubs.

Staff

The staff of Greely E.S. is a close-knit group of professionals who are dedicated to providing the best for the students at this school. They bring a wealth of professional and creative qualifications to our school. They are very caring inpiduals who actively seek out new programs and initiatives to enhance both student learning and personal development. They get involved with, and encourage students to get involved with, fundraising for charities as citizens of a wider world. Even though it is a small school, staff members organize an amazing range of extra-curricular activities such as sports activities, arts events and music clubs. Staff members also inspire students to be innovative and creative, supporting the OCDSB Creativity motto “Lead the Way!” Our assemblies, organized by staff, are very well-attended community events which usually include a media show of activities throughout the school and some student participation. In essence, the staff at Greely uses their knowledge and experience to make the learning environment at the school the best possible one for the children who work and play here.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Greely is fortunate to have a very dedicated group of parents supporting the needs of the school. Parents meet each month to coordinate the hot lunch program, fundraising, and child-centered activities such as the Winter Fun Day and the Holiday Fling. The funds contributed to the school have provided many positive additions to the school. Over the last few years the parents have contributed extensively to a greening project to improve our school yard with hands-on planting, pruning and fertilizing to provide a welcoming environment. Over the past few years, with contributions from the OCDSB, City of Ottawa, private donors and the amazing efforts of parents, our kindergarten and junior play structures were built. Community volunteers, including university students and retirees, are always welcome to share their gifts with staff and students at Greely E.S.

Community

Greely is very fortunate to have a large number of community partners who support events in our school. Local businesses contribute a remarkable number of prizes to our community events. We are proud of our partnership with the Ottawa 67’s and appreciate visits from members of the Canadian Legion. We are appreciative of the support we have received from the Ottawa Fire Department, Greely Community Karate Club, MASC, City of Ottawa, Luv2Groove Dance Studio, and Greely Lions Club. We are particularly grateful to the following donors who supported the development of our kindergarten play structure: Greely Elementary School Council, City of Ottawa, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Greely Lions Club, and a generous donation from Marco and Kim Scapillati of M. Scapillati Flooring in Manotick. Donations from the OCDSB’s Education Foundation provide basic needs for students who would otherwise lack the essentials for learning and attending school. Community partners are welcomed throughout the year, and are honoured at an annual volunteer breakfast.
